Our campus deepens its commitment to our planet and its inhabitants through engaging, community-wide events and initiatives that touch each focus area of sustainability.
August
Move In Thrift Sales
During move-in week on campus, a huge sale takes place featuring items left behind by students during Move Out the previous May. Hosted at the student-run Touchdown Thrift Store, the sale aims to promote reuse & circularity while offering discounted dorm goods!
October
Food Justice Month
October is Food Justice Month at Oxy! Food justice is the concept that all people deserve access to healthy, affordable, sustainable, and culturally-relevant foods. All October long, Oxy sustainability and public health groups celebrate Food Justice Month to raise awareness about sustainability in the food system and food workers' rights.
November
Olive Harvest Fest
In the late fall, when our campus olive trees are ripe, the community comes together for the annual Olive Harvest Fest that results in our very own Oxy Olive Oil!
April
Earth Month
At Oxy, “Earth Day” just isn’t enough to capture our commitment to sustaining our planet! Earth Month is celebrated all April long and features dozens of sustainability-related events.
May
Green Move Out
Each spring, as students leave the dorms, they leave mountains of “stuff,” too. In an effort to reduce waste sent to landfill and encourage reuse on campus, Green Move Out captures and repurposes these items thanks to the help of student volunteers.
Commencement Sustainability
In alignment with the college’s commitment to waste reduction and environmental sustainability, the college provides filtered, chilled water refill stations instead of single-use plastic water bottles at our commencement ceremony in May. We encourage guests to bring their own bottle or cup! For more information on Commencement, visit the Commencement page.
Additionally, the college scaled back the number of paper programs available at the Commencement ceremony and offers a cap and gown rental through the Oxy Bookstore to encourage reuse and reduce waste.
